See if you can get a DVD version, Boot from the DVD, hold down 'C' after the chime, erase and format the hard drive Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and do the install, update to OS X.6.8 and from there if you have an Apple ID you can download operating systems from the App Store. With a 2011 iMac with say 8GB of memory go for the latest version, El. At this point, the Mac should start to download the recovery files from the internet and show a status bar. When complete, it should reinstall macOS Recovery and reinstall macOS on the main partition.

Firstly, Im a long time intermediate Windows user with little knowledge on the Mac systems. so any help and clear direction would be great.
Back story- I recently purchase a secondhand 2007/8 Mac PC that was running El Capitan OS X, for my wife as she is about to start Uni again.
My first instinct was a fresh install, to clear any old stuff from the previous user. I don't have any OS Disks, So with a bit of googling and went ahead with the process.
I was able to clear the main HD (Macintosh HD) and everything was good until i went to re-install.
The Issue: When trying to reinstall the El Capitan OS X though the OS X Utilities. I am getting a 'This item is temporarily unavailable, try again later' message, after signing in with my apple ID (which i had from ipads).
What i have tried:
1. Change the date through Terminal to 2016. - Failed
2. Get help online and log into iCloud on the Mac, then go back and try to install. - Failed
On another note - all attempts to use internet boot install (CMD, Option, R) have failed. i think this may be due to using a wireless keyboard and it not syncing until after the Mac has 3/4 loaded.
I also do not have access to any other Mac system.
Any help or guidance would be great.

You must repartition the drive and remove all traces of the prior owner. If the MBA came with Lion or later pre-installed then do this:

- Insert Snow Leopard DVD into the optical drive and restart the computer.
- Immediately upon hearing the chime hold down the C key.
- Release the key when the Apple logo appears and wait for the loading to finish.
- After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities' menu. After Disk Utility loads select the out-dented disk entry from the side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive size.) Click on the Partition tab in the Disk Utility’s right window. Set the number of partitions to one (1) from the drop down menu. Click on the Options button and select GUID, click OK button, set the format type to MacOS Extended, Journaled. Finally, click on the Apply button.
- After formatting has finished quit Disk Utility. Continue with the OS X installation and follow the directions.
- When the installation has finished the computer will restart into the Setup Assistant. After you complete the Setup Assistant you will be running a fresh installation of Snow Leopard. Open Software Update and install the recommended updates.
- If you are planning to sell or give your computer away, then do the following: After you reformat your hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard, the computer restarts to a Welcome screen. To leave the Mac in an OOTB (Out Of The Box) state, don't continue with the setup. Instead, press Command and Q keys to shut down the computer. The Setup Assistant will guide the new owner through the setup process after he/she turns on the computer.
- Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. You can then download and install your own copy of El Capitan or Sierra.
